Exeter Canal Bridges

Description

The Exeter Canal is crossed by two bridges on the A379 at Countess Wear: a swing bridge and a bascule bridge. The older swing bridge, dating from 1936, replaced earlier swing bridges on the same site. The newer bascule bridge, built in 1972, lifts rather than swings and is located on the north carriageway. These bridges are part of the Exeter bypass and are designed to allow river traffic to pass.
